Oct 25, 2024 · Weeks after Hurricane Helene ravaged western North Carolina with a record downpour, many people still do not have clean drinking water. More than 150,000 municipal-water customers remain under boil-water notices, and around four in 10 of all private wells tested so far weren’t safe to drink from. It’s a challenge more Americans could face as flood damage increases under global warming. In the United States, about 42 million people get their water from private wells, which are largely unregulated.
