The question of what to do about climate change is often framed as two opposing absolutes.
The first is this: What can I do, as a sole actor with some control over my personal choices and actions? There’s also an activist variant of this one: What can I do if I join a group of, say, nonviolent protesters?
The second is less personal, more passive, and - it is often argued - actually more realistic: What can be done by people with special skills or positions, such as engineers, politicians, and CEOs?

If you’ve been wondering what climate change means for your neighborhood, you’re in luck. The most detailed interactive map yet of the United States’ vulnerability to dangers such as fire, flooding, and pollution was released in early October by the Environmental Defense Fund and Texas A&M University.

As the climate warms, parts of Rwanda are becoming more vulnerable to floods and landslides.
In some places, the nation’s government has required residents to relocate to new, planned villages in less dangerous areas.
Lisa Dale is with the Columbia Climate School. Her team interviewed dozens of Rwandans who moved from two rural islands on Lake Rweru.
All of them said they wanted to relocate. Their new village is less isolated and they can access important services there, like health care, transportation, electricity, and school.

In 2020, 16 young people sued the state of Montana over climate change.
They argued that by not considering climate change when permitting the extraction and burning of fossil fuels, the state had violated their right to a clean and healthful environment, which is protected by the Montana state constitution.
This summer, they won their case.
“I was really grateful to be up there and get to tell my story and have the chance to have it matter,” says 22-year-old Rikki Held, the lead plaintiff in Held v. Montana.

Very few parts of the U.S. have been untouched by extreme weather.
According to a recent report, 90% of U.S. counties had a federally declared weather disaster between 2011 and 2021.
“Some counties have had as many as 12 disasters during that time,” says Amy Chester of Rebuild by Design. Her group recently released the Atlas of Disaster, an online map of these events.
