Does COP have a Prayer? Turns out, Yes. - Climate Crocks  (Dec 5) |
|
Dec 5 · Below, Self proclaimed Sadguru has gotten involved in extensive spiritual support efforts at the COP28 meeting. Above, turns out he has a long running, apparently well thought out, tree planting program in India – video by Oregon State Permaculture instructor Andrew Millison. Among the hubs for climate scientists, activists and fossil fuel lobbyists at the United Nations climate summit is a new addition this year: a place to pray. The first-ever Faith Pavilion, inaugurated by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed Al-Tayeb, in a video message on Sunday, offers a space for meditation, daily prayers and even a chanting session led by the Indian mystic and ... Outcry At COP28 President “No Science” Remarks - Climate Crocks  (Dec 4) |
|
Dec 4 · That awkward phase when your global climate conference is chaired by the Arab CEO of one of the world’s largest oil companies. The president of Cop28, Sultan Al Jaber, has claimed there is “no science” indicating that a phase-out of fossil fuels is needed to restrict global heating to 1.5C, the Guardian and the Centre for Climate Reporting can reveal. Al Jaber also said a phase-out of fossil fuels would not allow sustainable development “unless you want to take the world back into caves”. PBS NewsHour: Excellent Reporting on Texas’ Renewable Boom - Climate Crocks  (Dec 4) |

Dec 4 · Excellent PBS report putting Texas surprising renewable boom in context, with appearances by important players like George W. Bush. At a moment when Michigan has joined states with an aggressive clean energy mandate, important to point out that Texas’ renewable energy standard predated them all – California, everybody. Includes a valuable summary of the 2021 Blackout, and shows how that was caused by failure of fossil fuels, primarily gas.For more on that, see my essential interviews with experts on that topic below. (Dis)Solving the Wind Turbine Recycling Problem - Climate Crocks  (Dec 3) |

Dec 3 · I’ve reported before on new approaches to the “problem” of wind turbine blade recycling. I put “problem” in quotes, because, like the “problem” of recycling solar panels, the issue exists mainly in the social media disinformation space, egged on by a small army of misinformers and bad actors from various fossil fuel funded “think tanks” and the like. These flimflammers make a living by relying on the ignorance of the average social media surfer, who has no concept of the scale of current fossil fuel waste streams, especially coal ash, which is the second largest waste stream in the US behind only household garbage. In the ... So far this year, the brand sold 726,031 vehicles, over 11% more than a year ago. And there’s even better news for the Korean giant on the electric front. Last month, sales of the Hyundai E-GMP-based all-electric cars - Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 - amounted to 2,372 and 1,386 respectively, for a total of 3,758. That’s a 216% increase year-over-year. Dec 2 · Oil and gas companies, eager to distance themselves from the planet-warming reality of their core business, aren’t shy about touting their investments in clean energy and other low-carbon technologies. But new data shows that their effort on this front remains meager. According to a new report by the International Energy Agency, last year oil and gas companies accounted for just 1.2 percent of the more than $1.6 trillion invested into low- and zero-carbon technologies worldwide. The industry spent $20 billion on such investments in 2022, equal to only 2.7 percent of its total capital spending for the year. Killer Coal Continues Crashing - Climate Crocks  (Dec 2) |
|
Dec 2 · Killer Coal Continues Crashing Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis: Despite hotter summer temperatures and increased power demand to run air conditioning in some parts of the country this summer, the use of coal has fallen. This is a result of lower prices for gas - coal’s primary fossil-fuel competitor - and a surge in utility-scale solar generation, which was up 20% in July from July 2022, and up 23% in August from a year ago. The EIA’s current outlook suggests even more deterioration for coal power in the coming months. Nigeria’s Push Toward Solar Could be a World Leader - Climate Crocks  (Dec 2) |

Dec 2 · A do it yourself revolution in Nigeria’s largest city could create a distributed grid unique in the world. The end of the long-running fuel subsidy last month has increased interest in solar, operators say, which could accelerate progress toward mitigating climate change in Africa’s largest economy. But experts say the government needs a clear plan to make the most of this new opportunity to advance Nigeria’s climate goals, which include eliminating fossil fuel-run generators widely used to keep the lights on in homes and businesses. Reducing fuel costs was a popular but environmentally and economically costly system. The state petroleum company, NNPC, says ... Read more ... |

Pylon Pile-On Holds Up Critical Transmission Lines - Climate Crocks  (Dec 2) |

Dec 2 · Good discussion of the permitting barriers facing critical new transmission lines. We will not meet climate goals without new transmission, and keeping the lights on in the face of deteriorating and aging infrastructure, in an age of more extreme climate events, will be impossible if NIMBYs on both sides of the political fence give some ground. I’m especially upset by the short sightedness of purported “green” groups who are unwilling to understand the bigger picture. We’ve seen some giant leaps in permitting reform around the midwest, related to solar, wind, and battery siting. We need to make similar progress for transmission. "The sharpest climate ... Read more ... |

Visualizing: What if All the Ice Melted? - Climate Crocks  (Dec 2) |

Dec 2 · I hear people say, “But, back in the time of the dinosaurs, the world was much warmer, but obviously full of life.”To which I always answer, “Well, that’s an experiment we can run if we want to – but what we do know is that in those times there was no ice on the planet, and oceans were 200 feet higher.” Usually gets a frown. No one expects that any time soon, and frankly if things get that warm we will have had much greater worries much, much sooner. But for the sake of making an example, this video is worth bookmarking.
