Nov 09, 2021 · Food systems around the world are increasingly at risk from the impacts of climate change. At the same time, these systems, which include all activities from food production to consumption and food waste, are responsible for about one-third of the human-caused greenhouse gas emissions warming the planet. To drive research-based innovation that will make food systems more resilient and sustainable, MIT’s Abdul Latif Jameel Water and Food Systems Lab (J-WAFS) announced the launch of a new initiative at an event during the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, last week. The initiative, called the Food and Climate Systems Transformation (FACT) Alliance, will better ... Read more ... |

An engineering student expands her focus - MIT - Policy  (Dec 11, 2020) |
Dec 11, 2020 · Danielle Grey-Stewart, a senior majoring in materials science and engineering, is a fierce believer that public service and engineering go hand in hand. She aspires to be a leader in equitable science policy and plans on using her time at Oxford University, where she will be studying next year as a Rhodes Scholar, to study nature, society, and environmental governance. Despite her interest in public service, Grey-Stewart didn’t always see policy as a future career route. A passion for chemistry and understanding the physical world had led her to believe her goal was to become a cosmetic chemist. But a sophomore-year trip to visit the Navajo Nation marked a major turning point. Read more ... |

The lawsuit filed by MIT and Harvard seeks an injunction to ban implementation of the new policy, which was issued without warning on Monday with no ... Read more ... |

May 27, 2020 · Media can only be downloaded from the desktop version of this website. Vaccines are more likely to get through clinical trials than any other type of drug - but have been given relatively little pharmaceutical industry support during the last two decades, according to a new study by MIT scholars. Over a two-decade span from January 2000 to January 2020, private-sector vaccine-development efforts succeeded in bringing a drug to market 39.6 percent of the time, the researchers found. By contrast, programs to develop anti-infective therapeutics - medicines that lessen the severity of illness, including antibiotics - succeeded 16.3 percent of the time. "The probability ... The virus' rapid spread on ships like the Diamond Princess and USS Theodore Roosevelt highlighted the health risks that the 1.2 million workers currently at sea face. Travel restrictions and closed borders offer an additional challenge by not only disrupting the global supply chain, but preventing scheduled crew changeovers from taking place. To address these issues, the UN Global Compact Action Platform for Sustainable Ocean Business recently released recommendations developed by their Covid-19 Task Force. Mar 18, 2020 · If successfully harnessed, fusion would fundamentally change the world's energy grid by offering safe, abundant, carbon-free electricity production. Some 300 members of the fusion community hammered out their consensus during three major workshop meetings and hundreds of online working-group sessions, using an anonymous voting process that gave all participants the chance to express themselves freely. The top energy-related priorities include: "This is first time in a generation when the fusion community has been called upon to self-organize and figure out its highest priorities for getting from fusion science to fusion energy," says Bob Mumgaard, chief executive of MIT ... How door-to-door canvassing slowed an epidemic - MIT - Policy  (Feb 26, 2020) |
Feb 26, 2020 · Liberia was the epicenter of a high-profile Ebola outbreak in 2014-15, which led to more than 10,000 deaths in West Africa. But for all the devastation the illness caused, it could have been worse without an innovative, volunteer-based outreach program Liberia's government deployed in late 2014. Now, a study co-authored by an MIT professor shows how much that program, consisting of door-to-door canvassing by community volunteers, spread valuable information and changed public practices during the epidemic. The findings also demonstrate how countries with minimal resources can both fight back against epidemics and gain public trust in difficult circumstances. Hospital rankings hold up - MIT - Policy  (Jan 30, 2020) |
Jan 30, 2020 · Given the complexities of health care, do basic statistics used to rank hospitals really work well? A study co-authored by MIT economists indicates that some fundamental metrics do, in fact, provide real insight about hospital quality. "The results suggest a substantial improvement in health if you go to a hospital where the quality scores are higher," says Joseph Doyle, an MIT economist and co-author of a new paper detailing the study's results. The study was designed to work around a difficult problem in evaluating hospital quality: Some high-performing hospitals may receive an above-average number of very sick patients. Accepting those difficult cases could, on the ... | By Peter Dizikes | MIT News Office Read more ... |

Dec 17, 2019 · Anoushka Bose arrived at MIT in 2016 intent on pursuing problems related to climate change and energy. But two years later, she found herself discussing arms control and international security with Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov during a policy forum connecting American and Russian students. "It was eye-opening for me," says Bose, a double major in political science and physics. "I thought it was fascinating to see how politics and diplomacy work between countries that don't share the same motivations." In the wake of this experience and a set of equally transformative internships, Bose is now on a new trajectory, moving purposefully toward a public-service ... Read more ... |

The uncertain role of natural gas in the transition to clean energy - MIT - Policy  (Dec 16, 2019) |
Dec 16, 2019 · A new MIT study examines the opposing roles of natural gas in the battle against climate change - as a bridge toward a lower-emissions future, but also a contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Natural gas, which is mostly methane, is viewed as a significant "bridge fuel" to help the world move away from the greenhouse gas emissions of fossil fuels, since burning natural gas for electricity produces about half as much carbon dioxide as burning coal. But methane is itself a potent greenhouse gas, and it currently leaks from production wells, storage tanks, pipelines, and urban distribution pipes for natural gas. Increasing its usage, as a strategy for decarbonizing the ... Read more ... |

Nov 27, 2015 · Q: Why did ISchO write to the MIT community now? A: Last year, DHS announced that it was likely to increase visits to employers of foreign nationals in F-1 STEM Optional Practical Training (OPT) status. Since then, we have been developing guidance for those at MIT in that status, as well as their supervisors. DHS has stated several reasons why it might make a visit, including: to confirm that an employer has sufficient resources and supervisors to provide training for the F-1 STEM OPT employee; to confirm that the employee is engaged in that training, as described in the STEM OPT extension application; and possibly to request information about wages being paid to the ...
