Oct 16, 2020 · On Aug. 4, the third-largest non-nuclear blast the world has ever seen shook the city of Beirut, Lebanon. The city’s core was wiped out. Beirut was in shambles, leaving 300,000 people homeless in a city that was already struggling economically, politically, and socially - all during a global pandemic. Thousands of injured people flooded Beirut’s hospitals. Adil, a Lebanese student who was in Boston during the blast, recalled his initial response to the news, “calling my parents to check up on them was my first instinct and every ring waiting for them to answer felt like an eternity, only to find out that my mother had been hurt. My world stopped.” With hospitals in the ... Read more ... |

Oct 09, 2020 · Far-reaching effects of structural racism can be seen in all facets of American life. This year, as Americans witnessed widespread demonstrations stemming from racial injustice at the hands of officers in law enforcement, a ground swell of conversations about race and pleas for action emerged. One area in which racism has had significant effects is health care equity, a fact that has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. In light of current events, members of the MIT community involved in the successful hackathons MIT Covid-19 Challenge and MIT Hacking Medicine sought to explore the role of racism embedded in U.S. health care structures. More specifically, how could they ... Read more ... |

MIT begins testing wastewater to help detect Covid-19 on campus - MIT - Community  (Oct 02, 2020) |
Oct 02, 2020 · This week, MIT began piloting a wastewater testing program as a new tool to help keep the campus community safe this semester. In a project that will run through the fall semester, wastewater from seven buildings on campus will be tested each day for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. The project is designed to determine if wastewater testing can be an effective early warning system for Covid-19 outbreaks on campus, and is being evaluated as a complementary tool in the Institute’s response to the pandemic, along with clinical testing, contact tracing, and other measures. Results of the wastewater testing will be communicated to MIT’s Covid Monitoring Team, a ... Read more ... |

How contact tracing happens at MIT - MIT - Community  (Oct 01, 2020) |
Oct 01, 2020 · Contact tracing is an essential tool for fighting the Covid-19 pandemic: If someone tests positive for the virus, health care workers move quickly to determine who else the infected individual had close contact with, and to set up measures to keep the virus from potentially spreading further. Yet while contact tracing has been a much-repeated phrase during the pandemic, people in the MIT community and beyond may wonder: How does the system actually work on the Institute’s campus? As it happens, MIT runs its own swift-moving contact tracing program through MIT Medical, the campus’ health center - which delivers test results and exposure information to individuals affected by ...
